IT Brand Pulse Announces May 2011 IT Brand Leaders

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA IT Brand Pulse, a trusted source of data and analysis about IT infrastructure, today announced the results of the May 2011 Brand Leader Awards survey. In this survey, respondents were asked which vendors they perceive as the leader in six IT categories: HPC Adapters, Mid-Range Servers, FCoE, StorageDatabases, Desktop Computers and Web Conferencing. For each category, respondents chose the brand leader in Market, Price, Performance, Reliability, Service and Support, and Innovation.

Highlights of the survey:

IBM captured the Market Leader award, as well as three out of five remaining awards in Mid-Range Servers. Perennially value-oriented Dell took the Price Leader spot while also snatching the Innovation category.

IT professionals chose HP/3Par as both the Market and Innovation Leader in FCoE Storage.

The other category awards (price, performance, reliability, and service and support) were split

among IBM, Hitachi Data Systems, and Dell/Compellent/EqualLogic.

Dominating IT perceptions of Database brand leadership, Oracle swept five of the six

categories; giving up only the Price Leader award to Microsoft.

Dell barely edged out HP as the Market Leader in Desktop Computers and managed to win one other category, Service and Support. In the April 2011 IT Brand Pulse survey, Dell tied with HP as Market Leader in Laptop Computers, proving that respondents perceive both companies nearly equal in the computer world. The remaining four awards in Desktop Computers went evenly to HP and Apple.

In Web Conferencing, Cisco and its TelePresence scored a decisive win in all six categories, with Citrix finishing in second-place.

Most press and analyst coverage of HPC adapters is focused on InfiniBand adapters used in

the Top 500 HPC clusters. However, the selection of Intel as the Market Leader in HPC

Adapters reflects the use of Ethernet adapters in large clusters, and in the broader market for

small clusters. Intel also emerged as the leader in all other categories except Performance, with Mellanox coming out on top. Up and coming Solarflare, has established a strong

presence in High Performance Business Computing, creating more evidence that Ethernet HPC

adapter leaders are perceived as overall market leader.

“Solarflare 10Gb technology has tapped into huge pent-up demand for high-performance server connectivity which leverages existing investments in Ethernet,” remarked Solarflare CEO Russell Stern. “The result is significant customer traction as evidenced by the IT Brand Pulse survey which shows Solarflare second only to Intel in mindshare.”

Frank Berry, IT Brand Pulse CEO and Senior Analyst, summed up the May, 2011 Brand Leader survey. “The most noteworthy results were for FCoE Storage products,” he said. “With four vendors winning at least one brand leader award, clear leaders have not yet emerged in this new market.”
